Homeschooling and Unschooling Activities and Ideas

Archeology and Dinosaurs

Bake or buy M&M cookies and have a cookie excavation.  With toothpicks try to remove the M&Ms unbroken from the cookies like archeologists do when they’re digging up artifacts or bones.

Cooking or Botony

Staring a garden can be a good way to give kids a hands on lesson in botony, agriculture, or teach them about sustainable living and where their food comes from.  If you already have a garden consider giving your child their own section of it to be in charge of and choose what they grow.  If you live in a place where a full garden isn't an option a few potted vegetables can be a feasable alternative.  An added bonus: picky eaters are more apt to try new things if they helped grow and cook it.

Reading and Writing

Make pancakes or soft pretzles in the shapes of letters.  Make words for the kids to read and let them form their own.  If you're not a big cook there are plenty of easy boxed pancake mixes.  Hurray for playing with food!

Writing Letters and Words

Write a letter or whole word depending on the child's level in the sand and let the child trace it or put leaves or flowers over the lines to form the words.  Once the word is there destroy it together and do another.
